Lufthansa 747 Economy Class Review

Recently while on an around the world trip we travelled with Lufthansa from New York’s JFK Airport to Frankfurt. 24 hours before our flight we were able to check in online and select our seat, the check-in process was quick and easy, but the flight was very full which made seat selection limited, you really need to get in quick to get your pick of seats.

At the airport, Lufthansa is out of terminal 1 and has a dedicated check-in counter which makes it easy to know where to go, because I had already checked in online I was able to drop my bag off and proceed through the airport. Like the check-in counter, the gate also had clear Lufthansa signage making it easy to see where to go.

The Economy class on the 747 is separated by Premium Economy, meaning there is a smaller economy towards the front of the plane. The front economy cabin that we were seated in only had 4 rows and was in a 3-4-3 layout. Being in the front cabin minimised cabin noise coming from other passengers, quicker meal service and the lights where dimmed sooner.

Each passenger is greeted by a soft blanket and pillow upon arrival at their seat. Headphones were also given out once in the air to use during the flight, these were collected again before landing. This did limit the time you could use the entertainment system if you have your own headphone you can continue using the entertainment system until landing.

The seat itself was very comfortable, with enough leg room in the 31-inch seat pitch. Although when the seat in front is reclined it is hard to sit with your legs crossed, luckily there is enough room to stretch your legs out under the seat in front. The seat also had a cup holder as well as a tray table, the cup holder was great for when you were reclining but didn’t want the tray table taking up extra space. The USB and headphone jack are both located on the bottom of the armrest, this is was good because it kept any cords out of the way, rather than hanging from the screen, but it was a bit difficult to plug everything in.

The entertainment system had a great selection of movies including some really new releases and other arthouse films, the range really had something for everyone. As this was a night flight it was great to watch a couple of movies before getting some sleep.

Being a night flight a lot of the passengers went to sleep very quickly but it would be a good idea to pack an eye mask as the dinner service starts once the plane is in the air and the lights stay on while this is happening. For dinner there was a choice between chicken and pasta, I selected the chicken which came with rice, salad, a bread roll and chocolate mousse for dessert. The selection was fresh and tasty but as it was almost midnight when it was served it was a bit of a heavy meal to eat it all. Most people only ate the dessert or a small portion of the meal before settling in for the night.

After the meal service was cleared away the lights were turned off and most people went to sleep or enjoyed the entertainment. WIFI could also be used during the flight, the instructions for set up could be found in the inflight magazine, but if you were having trouble the air hosts were more then happy to help. The options for WIFI ranged from 7EUR to 29EUR depending on your usage. The set up was very quick and easy and in no time I was online because this was a night flight I went for the 7EUR option and found it to be very quick. If the flight was during the day it would definitely be worth choosing one of the bigger packages to work or surf the internet during the flight.

One and a half hours before landing the cabin lights were turned up again and we were served a light breakfast before landing in Frankfurt, waking you up and getting you ready for the day ahead.
