Singapore Airlines A380 Business Class Review
On a recent Lufthansa Global Fare, our Marketing Assistant, Harriet, flew from Sydney to Singapore onboard Singapore Airlines A380 in Business Class before continuing to Munich with Lufthansa. As one of the closer hub cities to Australia, Singapore is an ideal transit for multiple round the world airfares including Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa, Finnair, oneworld or Star Alliance.
This was my first experience flying Business Class with Singapore Airlines, and when I arrived at check-in, I was so happy to jump in the Business Class priority line for a quick and easy process. After visiting the recently refurbished Singapore Airlines Sydney Business Class Lounge, I was ready to board. It was really busy, but again, priority boarding meant I could walk straight through.
Cabin and Seat
My first impression of the cabin was that it was spacious and light, thanks to the 1-2-1 configuration. The gally and toilets split the cabin into two areas, which helped make the space feel less crowded. At my seat, I was greeted by a plush pillow, amenity kit and slippers. I was seated in a window seat, and it felt very private, with the curved walls cocooning my seat. The middle seats had a similar design but with a partition in the middle that could be lowered to the midpoint without assistance or completely lowered with staff assistance. The seats were wide and very comfortable, being tall, I liked the amount of legroom, but I loved the fixed leg rest that ran along the side of the plane. This meant I would sit back and relax with my feet up as soon as I sat down. Around the seat was plenty of storage, including a side table, and compartments on the side of the seat and next to the entertainment screen. Thanks to the deep foot well, I could comfortably fit my bag under the seat in front without getting in the way of my seat.
The bedding, including a seat cover, big pillow, and plush blanket, was ready and waiting at my seat. Converting the seat to a flat bed was very simple, with one dedicated button to push. The seat cover slipped over the headrest for a comfortable rest while flying. The seat controls did take some getting used to when moving back to a seated position.
Amenities
Along with plenty of bedding waiting at my seat was a collection of amenities, including noise-cancelling headphones, a small amenities kit and my favourite of all – Slippers! When speaking to our airfare specialists in the office, we noticed a trend of more airlines providing slippers in Business Class, which everyone loves. It shows an extra level of consideration by the airlines for passengers walking around during the flight.
I was underwhelmed by the amenity kit, and I was only given a face moisturiser, lip balm, and face spray. It was all in a nice pouch, and other items could be requested, but it felt minimal for a Business Class amenity kit. If I was on a longer haul flight the amenity kit would have also included a hair brush, ear plugs, eye mask and socks, I could request these items on my flight. The noise-cancelling headphones worked well and were comfortable to wear.
Entertainment and WiFi
Inside one of the seat pockets were instructions for logging onto the inflight WiFi, which is free for Business Class passengers and KrisFlyer members. I had to wait until after takeoff to connect, but it was very easy. It was patchy at times but was good for checking social media and email.
While having good WiFi was a plus I didn’t feel like I needed to use my phone to be entertained with over 1,000 options on the inflight entertainment screen. The high-definition 18-inch touchscreen in front of me made it easy to kick back and relax with a good movie. The entertainment system could be controlled by either touching the main screen or the smaller remote, which mirrored the main screen. If I had to be picky, it would have been nice to check the flight time on the remote or browse other options without disrupting the entertainment.
Meal Service
Being a mid-morning flight, meal service started as quickly as possible, as soon as I sat down, I was offered a glass of Champagne, water, Orange Juice or a Bellini before confirming my Book the Cook order. As one of the main airlines that fly from Australia to Europe, I had a lot of Book the Cook recommendations from the RoundAbout Travel team. One of our Airfare Specialist, Liam, mentioned that the Lobster was delicious, while another team favourite is the classic Singapore Chicken Rice. I chose the grilled beef fillet with roasted vegetables and potato gratin.
Meal service began when an attendant set my table. I was offered another drink and warm nuts while I waited for my meal. The first course was Chicken Caesar salad, which was fresh and tasty—an excellent way to start my meal. The grilled beef was served, and it was a lot better than I expected. It was served hot and nicely grilled, and it was delicious—I loved the potato! I was given the choice of bread to go with my meal, I was surprised with the amount of options I could choose from, I chose the garlic bread, which was warm and flavoured nicely. For dessert, it was hard to choose between the cheesecake, mint ice cream and a cheese plate. In the end, I chose the cheese plate to finish my meal, which included three different cheeses, a selection of nuts, some quince paste and some crackers, It was nice to snack on while I got ready for sleep.
The second meal was served about two hours before boarding in Singapore. This was more of a light dinner rather than a full meal. This time, I chose Dim Sum and Rice over the Kale and Quinoa Salad. I enjoyed a selection of dumplings with fried rice, which was very tasty but would have been better with a sauce, but this is just my personal preference.
This was plenty of food, but if you were hungry during your flight or need to stretch your legs, there were self-serve snacks and water in the gally, or you could request more food from your seat.
Singapore Airlines A380 Business Class Summary
Flying from Australia with Singapore Airlines is a great way to start your around the world journey. The Business Class cabin is much larger than other cabins on the market, making it seem like the crew wasn’t as attentive as on other flights. But this did not take away from the experience, which was comfortable and relaxing. When I needed assistance, the crew was able to help in a timely manner.
