Singapore Airlines Business Class Review
One of our RoundAbout Travel airfare specialists recently flew Business Class from Perth to Zurich via Singapore return with Singapore Airlines and had the chance to experience the differences between the Medium Haul A350 and Boeing 777, while another team member flew from Singapore to Frankfurt on the Long Haul A350.
The flight from Perth to Singapore was operated on the Medium Haul/Regional A350 as it was less than 6 hours in length. The cabin has a 1-2-1 layout with a staggered seat configuration. The position of the console switches side allowing the single seat either next to the window, or the console on the left with the seat on the aisle. The middle seats either have the console on the aisle with the seats placed together, or the seats on the aisle with the consoles placed together.
We sat in the companion seats with a privacy divider lowered between the two seats, however, you will need to lean forward slightly to be face to face with your travelling partner. If you prefer a little extra space when entering your seat, it’s best to select one with the seat on the aisle so there is no need to move past the console.
The seat converts into a fully flat bed at the push of a button and you will find a pillow and blanket on the seat upon boarding. We did find the mattress to be firmer than other airlines and would have appreciated a provided mattress top would be useful in future to give it a little more softness.
On this flight we ordered from the menu provided upon boarding.
Another team member flew from Singapore to Frankfurt on the Long Haul A350. The main difference between the two services is that the cabin is not staggered, but still offers the same style of business class seat and service.
On this flight, we took advantage of the Book the Cook service, where you can pre-book meals from a more extensive selection such as a rack of lamb or lobster thermidor along with many Asian varieties. You can book this service between 6 months and 24 hours prior to your flight. We ordered the lobster thermidor and chicken rice.
As we departed Singapore, we rested in the SilverKris lounge. While the lounge was comfortable with extensive amenities, at the time it was relatively busy and made it difficult to find a seat.
On the remainder of flights on to Zurich and back to Perth, we were on the Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. The cabin layout is a standard 1-2-1 layout that also isn’t staggered. We were seated in a middle bulkhead seat where the foot space wasn’t recessed into the wall, giving slightly more space. Being a bulkhead though it was near the bathrooms so did have more disturbance nearby.
The bed converts into a fully flat bed, but you will need to exit the seat and manually reconfigure. The attendants are more than happy to assist you. The blanket and pillow are stored behind your headrest and can be tricky to find if you aren’t aware.
On this flight we also utilised the Book the Cook service and while the meal was tasty, the meals provided on the in-flight menu on the first flight were just as good.
An amenity kit is only provided on flights longer than 6 hours in length so wasn’t offered on the Perth to Singapore routes. The small pack consisted of lip balm, mist spray and hand cream. For any additional items like slippers and eyeshades, we needed to request from an attendant. It was a small offering considering the extensive kits offered on other airlines.
Overall, it was a comfortable experience on board Singapore Airlines with all flights offering fully flat beds with great service from the attendants.
